On Thursday night I attended the Graphic Designers + Photographers Unite seminar held by AGDA WA. Not only was there free pizza and beer, but it was presented by Simon Cowling, Rob Frith, and Craig Kinder, three of Perth’s finest working photographers.

They spoke about how to better brief and direct a photographer, and about the advantages of using a professional photographer instead of stock photography or the nearest person with a DSLR. They went through a number of case studies and spoke about their own experiences at length. It was pretty amazing!

Simon has photographed some huge stars, such as Luke Steele and Tim Minchin, and Craig went through case studies of his shoots for the Get Home Before Sunrise campaign – a huge campaign that I know all you Perth folk will be familiar with – as well as a recent shoot he did with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Rob went through the shoot he did for the new Catalina subdivision. Each speaker was candid and conversational, with a great deal of experience to share. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

A rag tag collection of photos from Unwrapped, including a photo of me looking amazed by some hats at someone else’s stall (I collect hats) and buying some beautiful artwork from another vendor. It was a really great day. Big ups to Luke, Julia & Mei who helped organise and man the stall, and a big thank you to all my Tumblr buddies who came down and said hi! It was awesome to meet you!
